    Why Do Women Have Longer Unemployment Durations than Men in Post-Restructuring Urban China?

    This paper provides the first systematic analysis of the reasons why women endure longer unemployment durations than men in post-restructuring urban China using data obtained from a national representative household survey. Rejecting the view that women are less earnest than men in their desire for employment, the analysis shows that women's job search efforts are handicapped by lack of access to social networks, social stereotyping (that married women are unreliable employees), unequal access to social reemployment services stemming from sex segregation prior to the displacement, and wage discrimination in the post-restructuring labor market.Gender inequality, unemployment duration, Oaxaca-decomposition

    Method for Thermo-optic Analysis in a Star Sensor

    An autonomous star sensor is a highly accurate attitude-measuring instrument used in spacecraft, and its performance is restricted by ambient temperature of the outer space. This paper puts forward an effective scheme to the thermooptic analysis using finite element analysis (FEA) and ray tracing in star sensor. Specific difficulties: (a) how to evaluate thermo-optic effect in star sensor, and (b) how to make FEA results useful in optical design mode have been resolved using the scheme. Based on this scheme, the errors of star sensor, which are caused by thermo-optic effects, can be investigated in any complicated temperature condition, and the required temperature scope for the thermal design can be achieved. For example, the errors of the star sensor were 0.0863" and 2.2933", when the temperature differences of the experimental optical system were 10 °C and 5 °C in axial and lateral, respectively.Defence Science Journal, 2010, 60(3), pp.276-281, DOI:http://dx.doi.org/10.14429/dsj.60.35

    Observation of electric current induced by optically injected spin current

    A normally incident light of linear polarization injects a pure spin current in a strip of 2-dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit coupling. We report observation of an electric current with a butterfly-like pattern induced by such a light shed on the vicinity of a crossbar shaped InGaAs/InAlAs quantum well. Its light polarization dependence is the same as that of the spin current. We attribute the observed electric current to be converted from the optically injected spin current caused by scatterings near the crossing. Our observation provides a realistic technique to detect spin currents, and opens a new route to study the spin-related science and engineering in semiconductors.Comment: 15 pages, 4 figure

    Structure and formation of anticyclonic eddies in the Iceland Basin

This study documents the structure for an anticyclonic eddy in the Iceland Basin using high‐resolution hydrographic and velocity observations. The eddy core waters have lens‐like structure with warm and salty features in the upper 1,000 m. The eddy distorts the density surface by doming the upper isopycnals and deepening the ones near the permanent pycnocline. The eddy has a diameter of about 120 km with substantial barotropic component in the velocity profiles. One branch of the North Atlantic Current in the central Iceland Basin is superimposed onto the eddy, leading to asymmetric velocity structure. Satellite maps show that eddy first shows up over the western slope of the Hatton Bank and moves westward to the central Iceland Basin. The waters enclosed in the eddy core share the same properties with Subpolar Mode Waters. Similar anticyclonic eddies are also found in high‐resolution numerical model simulations, which is used to explore eddy formation. The model results reveal that the potential vorticity gradient prior to the eddy event change signs in both horizontal and vertical directions. This potential vorticity gradient structure meets the necessary condition for the barotropic and baroclinic instabilities. Further calculation of the energy conversions suggests that eddies extract mean potential energy from the large‐scale isopycnal slope and gain the mean kinetic energy in the upper ocean.
